Privacy Policy
Updated 24 October 2026. This is the policy for the Parlo app and website at parlotranslate.hamzayousr4.workers.dev (and any domain we move it to).
1. Who we are
Parlo is run by Parlo ("we", "us"). You can reach us at [YOUR CONTACT EMAIL] for anything in this policy.
2. What we collect and why
| What | Why | Kept by us? |
|---|---|---|
| Text you type or speak (after speech is turned into text) | To translate it and read the translation aloud. | No. It is sent for processing and not saved on our servers. |
| Photos in camera mode | To find the text in the picture and translate it. | No. The photo is shrunk, sent for reading and not saved on our servers. |
| Your voice | To turn speech into text. Depending on your device, this is done by your browser's built-in speech recognition, or by a small model that runs on your device. | No. We never receive your audio recordings. |
| Country you pick for a travel guide, plus your languages | To write the guide. | No. Guides are saved on your own device. |
| Account details: your email address and password | To sign you in. Your password is stored by our account provider in hashed form. We never see it. | Yes, until you delete your account. |
| Saved phrases and settings: the phrases you bookmark (original, translation, languages, country) and your language, theme, voice and speed choices | To show your Atlas and keep it the same on every device you sign in on. | Yes, if you are signed in. If you're not, they stay on your device only. |
| Plan and subscription status: whether you are on Parlo Plus, your renewal date, and a Stripe customer reference | To give you Plus and manage your subscription. | Yes, while your account exists. Stripe keeps its own payment records as the law requires. |
| Daily usage counts: how many translations, photos, guides and voice clips you use each day, linked to your account or to a random ID made by your browser | To apply fair daily limits and to tell which plan you are on. | Yes, as simple counts, for about a week. Deleting your account removes the counts linked to it. |
| Technical data: IP address, device and browser type, and error details | To deliver the app, keep it secure and fix problems. | Held briefly in the logs of our hosting and account providers. |
We don't collect your name, phone number, precise location, contacts or payment details through the app today. If we add paid plans, payments will be handled by a payment provider and we'll update this policy first.
3. Who processes your data
We use these services to run Parlo. They process data on our behalf, under their own terms:
- Google (Gemini API): reads and translates your text and photos, and writes travel guides. See Google's privacy policy.
- Microsoft (Azure AI Speech): turns translations into natural-sounding speech. The text of the translation is sent to it. See Microsoft's privacy statement.
- Live trip facts: to show the weather and exchange rate for a trip, your destination name is sent from our server to OpenStreetMap (to find the place), the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (weather) and ExchangeRate-API (rates). Nothing else about you is sent, and your browser never contacts them directly.
- Supabase: handles accounts and stores your saved phrases, settings and Travel Buddy trips and chat. See Supabase's privacy policy.
- Stripe: takes payments for Parlo Plus. You enter your card details on Stripe's page, not ours. We receive only your plan, its status and renewal date. See Stripe's privacy policy.
- Cloudflare: hosts the app and website and keeps standard server logs. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Your browser or phone maker (for example Google Chrome or Apple Safari): may process your voice when you use the microphone, under their own policies.
- Google Fonts, unpkg and jsDelivr: serve the app's typeface, Earth images and the on-device voice tool. Your IP address is visible to them when your browser downloads those files. The on-device voice model is downloaded from Hugging Face.
These providers may keep data for a limited time, for example to prevent abuse, and may handle data in other countries. We don't control their practices, so please read their policies if this matters to you. We do not sell your data.
4. How AI handles your data
Parlo's translations, photo reading, travel guides and (for some languages) voices are made by AI services run by other companies. Here is exactly what is sent to them, and what happens to it:
- Typed or spoken text is sent to Google's Gemini to be translated. The translation text is then sent to Microsoft's Azure AI Speech to create the spoken voice, where a natural voice is available.
- Photos taken in camera mode are shrunk and sent to Google's Gemini to find and translate the text in them. Parlo doesn't save the photo.
- Your voice is turned into text by your browser's speech recognition (which may use servers run by Google or Apple) or by a small model that runs on your own device. We never receive a recording of your voice.
- Travel guides: the country and languages you choose are sent to Gemini to write the guide.
- ParlAI (travel companion): your messages, your last few chat messages and a short summary of your current trip (destination, dates, interests) and Atlas (how many phrases and from which countries) are sent to Gemini to write a reply or suggest activities. Its suggestions are ideas, not verified facts. ParlAI also sees what is already in your itinerary and saved places so it can answer questions about them. Your trips, itineraries, places, notes and chat are stored on your device and, if you have an account, in your private account data so they follow you between devices. Deleting your account deletes them.
- ParlAI and your travel guide: if you have opened a travel guide for your trip country, a condensed copy of it is read from your device and sent to Gemini with your questions so ParlAI can answer from it. Guides are never uploaded on their own.
- ParlAI remembered preferences: if you tell ParlAI something lasting (for example that you are vegetarian), it asks whether to remember it. Only if you say yes is a short note kept, on this device only, and sent to Gemini with later questions so suggestions fit you. You can remove notes any time from the empty chat screen.
- ParlAI place search, photos and voice: when you ask for nearby places, our server sends a rounded location (your trip's destination, or your position if you tap "Use my location") to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim and Overpass services. Your position is only used for that search and is not stored; only your choice to keep location on is remembered on your device, and you can turn it off any time. Place details come from OpenStreetMap contributors and are not checked by Parlo. If you attach a photo, it is shrunk on your device and sent to Gemini to answer your question; it is not kept after the answer. Voice input uses your browser's speech recognition (or, on devices without it, a short recording is sent for transcription) only while you hold the microphone on. Spoken replies use your device's voice.
We don't keep your translations, photos or voice, and we don't use them to train AI models. The AI providers handle what they receive under their own terms. Depending on the service and plan, a provider may keep inputs for a limited time to detect abuse and, on some free plans, may use them to improve its products. For that reason, please don't translate or photograph passwords, card numbers, health records or other highly sensitive material.
AI can be wrong. Parlo doesn't use AI to make decisions about you, and the results are only suggestions for you to check.
5. What stays on your device
Parlo uses your browser's storage (not advertising cookies) to remember your languages, theme, saved phrases, sign-in, downloaded travel guides, and a counter that keeps the natural voice within its monthly allowance. It also saves the app's screens so it can open offline. You can clear all of this at any time in your browser settings. Signing out removes your saved phrases from the device once they are safely synced.
6. How long we keep things
- Translations, photos and voice: not kept by us.
- Account, saved phrases and settings: until you ask us to delete them, or delete the account.
- Server and security logs: kept by our providers for a short period under their own policies.
7. Your choices and rights
You can delete your account yourself at any time: open Settings, choose Account, then Delete my account. That removes your account, saved phrases and settings from our servers and your device. You can also ask us to give you a copy of your data or correct it: email [YOUR CONTACT EMAIL] from the address you signed up with and we will act on it promptly. You can also remove any saved phrase yourself in the Atlas, and back up your Atlas to a file from Settings.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or Australia), you may also have the right to object to or restrict certain processing, to withdraw consent, and to complain to your local data protection authority. We will respect those rights wherever they apply.
8. Permissions
Parlo only asks for the microphone when you tap to speak, and the camera when you open camera mode. Your device shows you the request and you can say no or change it later in your browser or phone settings. The app still works for typing without them.
9. Security
Connections to Parlo and its providers are encrypted. Each person's saved data is protected so that only their own account can read it. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password and avoid translating anything highly sensitive, such as passwords or card numbers.
10. Children
Parlo is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where local law requires). Please don't create an account if you are younger. If you think a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Accuracy
Translations and travel guides are produced by AI and can contain mistakes. Check anything important, such as medical, legal or safety information, with a qualified person or official source.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change how Parlo handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top, and tell account holders about significant changes.
13. Contact
Questions, requests or complaints: [YOUR CONTACT EMAIL]. Our Terms of Use explain the rules for using Parlo.
